Virginia Creeper Trail

The Virginia Creeper Trail is without a doubt, one of the most popular things to do in the Southwest Virginia area and for good reason. This is a rails-to-trail endeavor that converted an old railroad bed to a bikepath. While the overall distance is 34 miles, the most popular section travels from Whitetop Station to Damascus. These 17 miles are almost all at a gentle descent. Honestly, it may be possible to bike this section and barely pedal.

We selected Creeper Trail Bike Rental as our outfitter of choice and we were very happy with them. They had a wide selection of bikes and helmets. I highly suggest making reservations in advance. We witnessed more than one family hoping to make the ride and unable to find an outfitter to rent or shuttle them.

The ride to Whitetop took about 30 minutes. And the descent took about 3.5 hours. Of course, we stopped many times, including grabbing lunch at the Creeper Trail Cafe. I would advise anyone to spend as much time on the trail as possible. There are so many great places to explore.

The Creeper Trail was, without a doubt, a highlight of the terrible 2020 year. I can only imagine how great it would be in a good year.
